Silver Sparrow

This year @ucfalumni gave me the opportunity to read an amazing novel and to take part in a very special discussion. As part of the NEA Big Read, I read Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones.

This is a beautifully written novel with a souther tone that reminds me of my southern roots. The story immediately pulls you in from the very first sentence...

“My Father, James Witherspoon, is a bigamist.”

This is the story of two girls who share a sisterly-bond and yet only one of them knows about the other. They often crave what the other has thinking the grass will be greener and yet it never is quite what they expected.

The characters in this story aren’t perfect. They make mistakes, they make sacrifices, but ultimately they adjust. There aren’t major blow outs or overly dramatic encounters (for the most part), but instead it’s a slow burn type of story where characters discover that every action has a consequence and that not all consequences are worth the action. That sometimes we get what we want and but not in the way we expected...and that sometimes it is much worse than what we had.

I highly recommend this book, especially if you enjoy books that explore family dynamics and that bring the setting to life. I am now looking forward to reading the other books by this author.
